Director, Engineering-CAN-ON-Cambridge
GFI, a Westport Fuel Systems company, designs and manufactures a comprehensive product mix of alternative fuel components for applications in the light and heavy duty vehicle and industrial segments globally. This product mix includes Hydrogen (H2) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) components such as pressure regulators, tank valves, PRD's, PRV’s, shutoff valves and integrated systems for a wide range of applications, including Fuel Cell vehicles.
Overview
The Director of Engineering is responsible for leading the engineering activities to ensure the delivery of innovative solutions and excellence in project execution. This role involves the functional leadership of engineering teams, ensuring that all engineering deliverables are met in alignment with corporate strategies and customer expectations. The Director will be accountable for operational excellence, developing engineering performance metrics, and driving continuous improvement across all projects. Additionally, the role focuses on the advancement of hydrogen and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) technologies within the company’s product portfolio.
Position Responsibilities:
- Allocate resources to projects, monitor scope, and ensure the delivery of quality, cost, delivery, and functional targets. Lead the team in addressing the most challenging technical issues.
- Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure projects meet or exceed customer expectations. Communicate priorities clearly to the team and manage project timelines and budgets.
- Provide functional leadership and mentorship to Engineering Project Managers, Product and Design Engineers. Drive the growth and development of team members, fostering a high-performing, collaborative, and innovative work environment
- Define and manage engineering team competence and capacity according to project plans. Ensure resources are effectively allocated across multiple projects to meet all engineering commitments
- Provide advanced technical support and calibration services for hydrogen and CNG systems, ensuring that engine management solutions are robust, reliable, and meet customer expectations in diverse global markets.
- Drive and support continuous improvement activities within the engineering teams. Implement best practices and propose process improvements to enhance operational efficiency.
- Lead the implementation of Statements of Work (SOW) processes, ensuring adherence to Westport’s quality systems and other relevant processes.
- Manage or dotted line reporting for remote global engineering resources as necessary.
Health & Safety Responsibilities:
- Promote Westport’s H&S culture following all Environmental, and H&S procedures and understanding your obligations and responsibilities
- Report unsafe conditions, behaviors and all accidents
- Co-operate with JHSC (Joint Health & Safety Committee) and Safety representative
Position Requirements:
- 10+ years of experience in engineering with at least 5 years managing engineering teams and at least 3 years managing projects.
- Experience in the automotive, trucking, or alternative fuel industries, particularly with hydrogen and CNG, is preferred.
- Demonstrated success in leading product development from concept to market.
- Strong background in project management processes (PMI/PMP certification or equivalent).
- Experience with Gated Product Development processes and engineering tools (e.g., Tech Requirements, DFMEA, DVPR).
- Knowledge of manufacturing, supply chain, and quality system standards (e.g., TS16949, APQP).
- Proficiency in Solidworks and/or other CAD and PDM packages, and standard drawing practices.
- Strong knowledge of BOM creation, stack-up tolerancing, and dimensional variation analysis.
- Experience with FEA, compressed gases, thermodynamic and fluid dynamic modeling is an asset.
- Strong cross-functional leadership with the ability to manage and inspire diverse teams
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with a high level of autonomy and initiative
- Ability to travel internationally
Salary Range
This role offers a competitive compensation and benefits program including a salary within our hiring range of $135,000 to $160,000. Range is dependent on numerous factors including job location, skills and experience.
